Ray (pt. 2)

I wanted to do a test with layering images and different techniques with image transfer. I used original patent images layered and pasted on plywood, then whitewashed. The red dots are air brushed, and then the black layer are image transfers. If you want a tactile experience, image transfers are the way to go. I think I lost my finger prints on this one.

Ray

I’m still infatuated with the impact of Charles and Ray Eames. Focusing on Ray, her design and painting roots adds such an essential element to he duo. Her work on Arts & Architecture magazine covers are still relevant today, especially when thinking about it in a non cumputer age. She also developed iconic patterns for textiles. I could go on and on. But here is a piece I am working on.

Time trial bowls.

Killed 2 birds with three stones. Making these trophies bowls for the hiawatha bowl time trial, I used the concrete bowls I’ve been making along with image transfers. Both processes could be more hands on. I love it. So many new ideas came out of this.

Image Transfer

I am always looking for new ways to generate an image and apply it to something. Drawing, photography, screen printing and now image transfer. This one was a bit more illusive as there are a copius amount of ways to do it, and also so many ways to mess it up. Some demonstrations made it look so easy for the first timers, but my results weren't successful. This was the first semi successfull transfer that I was testing out a few different mediums to apply the images with.

1. Matte Gel Medium on the top.
2 Polycrylic on the bottom.

Making bowls

There always seems to be a screen or two that you are looking at. The more screen time I have, the more I want to play more with something more tactile. Ink, paper, paint, wood, concrete. Things that you can't undo, things that make you move forward quickly, or deal with something that gets a little fucked up.

After spending time makeing the curbs this summer, I am taking it indoors and making bowls. Just anohter canvas to explore. I visited the local Savers and picked up a few mixing bowls that nested pretty well together and tried started making bowls. After a few confusing mishaps and a dozen youtube videos they started coming out pretty nice. Here are a few things I learned:

1. Quickcrete 5000 is working the best.
2. Using cooking spray to coat the bowl as a release agent.
3. Drilled a hole in the bottome of each bowl, that I can blow air into to release the bowl once it gas cured.

Let's see where this goes.

Pressing

Getting ink on your hands makes things feel more tangible than this digital life. I took this letterpress class to learn new techniques that o could use at home.

Curbed.

I’ve always wanted to learn the art of making things out of concrete. The right strength, how to get theat perfect edge, get rid of the bubbles. YouTube can get you in the ballpark, but practice and experimentation around your specific application is what will get you there. Get interested get involved.
